2.DrMartinLutherKing,Jr.
ItwasDecember1955,andMartinLutherKing,Jr.hadjustreceivedhisdoctoratedegreeintheology.HehadmovedtoMontgomery,Alabamatopreach(讲道)ataBaptistchurch.Hesawthere,asinmanyothersouthernstates,thatAfrican-Americanshadtorideinthebackofpublicbuses.DrKingknewthatthislawviolatedtherightsofeveryAfrican-American.HeorganizedandledaboycottofthepublicbusesinthecityofMontgomery.Anyperson,blackorwhite,whowasagainstsegregation(种族隔离)refusedtousepublictransportation.Thosepeoplewhoboycottedwerethreatenedorattackedbyotherpeople,orevenarrestedorjailedbythepolice.After382daysofboycottingthebussystem,theSupremeCourtdeclaredthattheAlabamastatesegregationlawwasunconstitutional.
African-AmericanswerenotonlysegregatedonbusesthroughouttheSouth.Equalhousingwasdeniedtothem,andseatinginmanyhotelsandrestaurantswasrefused.
In1957,DrKingfoundedtheSouthernChristianLeadershipConference(南方基督教领导会议)andmovedbacktohishometownofAtlanta,Georgia.ThiswasthebeginningoftheCivilRightsMovement.Inthefollowingyears,hecontinuedtoorganizenon-violentprotestsagainstunequaltreatmentofAfrican-Americanpeople.Hisphilosophyremainedpeaceful,andheconstantlyremindedhisfollowersthattheirfightwouldbevictoriousiftheydidnotresorttobloodshed.Nonetheless,heandhisdemonstratorswereoftenthreatenedandattacked.Demonstrationswhichbeganpeacefullyoftenendedupinviolence,andheandmanyotherswereoftenarrested.
TheCivilRightsActof1964waspassed.ItwasnotthefirstlawofcivilrightsforAmericans,butitwasthemostthoroughandeffective.Theactguaranteedequalrightsinhousing,publicfacilities,votingandpublicschools.Everyonewouldhaveimpartialhearings(申诉的机会)andjurytrials.Acivilrightscommissionwouldensurethattheselawswereenforced.DrMartinLutherKing,Jr.andthousandsofothersnowknewthattheyhadnotstruggledinvain.InthesameyearDrKingwontheNobelPeacePrizeforleadingnon-violentdemonstations.
